Syria reopens its sovereign state account at the US Federal Reserve in New York

 

This is important!

 

The account can be used to hold USD reserves, settle transactions with international institutions, and, most importantly in the Syrian case, serve as a conduit to private banks to facilitate the purchase of goods and services.

 

Syria has been struggling to find oil suppliers other than Russia, in part because of the state’s disconnected banking sector.
