In light of today's repatriation of 146 women and children from Syria to Tajikistan, I stumbled across this excellent paper by Nodirbek Soliev, who outlines the numbers of Central Asian fighters in Syria and Iraq: how many are detained, killed, or repatriated, by country or origin.

The vast majority of Central Asian fighters fought on the side of the opposition to Bashar al-Assad's regime, often on the side of extremist groups. As circumstances changed, their future remains up in the air.
