Captagon: OFAC Sanctions Eleven New Entities
Today, the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned 11 new individuals and entities for their roles in captagon supply and illicit financial transactions with respect to the Syrian regime and Russia.
Among the six already sanctioned by the EU, three rely on our earlier work at OPEN-Syria and the Syrian Forum USA's Syria Sanctions Policy Program: Mahmoud al-Dj, FreeBird, and Al-Tair.
However, today's OFAC listings are very significant because the five new listings (highlighted in yellow) reveal original and insightful information on sanctions evasion and illicit activities. This indicates a proactive stance in enforcing sanctions, moving beyond merely using information that is already publicly accessible.
