Damascus-Based UN Officials Aren’t Following Their Own Rules

Say you want someone to hand over your money to someone in need, but there are claims that the person has committed human rights violations. Would you get them to do the job?

I'm sure your answer is "of course not!" Being highly risky should be enough to avoid working with them.

An internal document from the UN from 2017, called Parameters and Principles of UN Assistance in Syria, states that the UN "...must not assist parties who have allegedly committed war crimes or crimes against humanity." (emphasis mine)

Yet UN officials in Damascus have repeatedly stated “beyond reasonable doubt” as their standard to avoid partnering with a risky supplier.

Good luck holding anyone accountable at such a high bar.
