How Western Governments Subsidize the Assad Regime
Syria’s Minister of Oil and Mineral Resources said a liter of Octane-90 petrol costs the government 12,100 Syrian pounds ($0.89 USD, about 3.37/gallon). Yet, it’s sold to the UN, funded almost single-handedly by Western Governments opposed to the criminal regime, for $1.50 (5.68/gallon, a 62% profit).
Our earlier work at OPEN-Syria in collaboration with the Syrian Legal Development Programme showed that 23% of UN procurements from Syria over 2019–2020 were obtained from companies owned by individuals or entities sanctioned by Western countries: punishing with one hand and paying with the other.
