I found this document from WikiLeaks particularly disturbing!

Prior to the 2011 uprising, the Syrian regime was claiming at home to support Hamas, while using it as a bogeyman behind closed doors to scare the West.

Remember: Hamas was headquartered in Damascus at the time.
