Although Syria has only four security branches, Syrians perceive that there are "hundreds of branches." This is simply because no one knows what each branch does; many of them have other nicknames and each spies on the others.

The recent merging of two of the top-tier branches (reducing the total to three instead of four) is, in practice, meaningless.
