On Sanctions: Initial Report from the Special Rapporteur
On today's initial report from Special Rapporteur Alena Douhan on the impacts of sanctions on human rights in Syria:
Sanctions need to be assessed holistically.
We should ask questions such as:
-- What are the negative and positive impacts of sanctions?
-- If not sanctions, then what?
-- Would dropping sanctions mean total impunity for war criminals, etc.?
Most importantly, the Belarusian Rapporteur herself is far from neutral. Her views seem to line up rather well with those of dictator Lukashenko.
When talking about the other drivers of deprivation in the country, she refers to "terrorists" multiple times. But she never mentions the Assad regime, which killed over 200K civilians, making the terrorists look like angels.
