Poverty Statistics in Syria: Who Do I Believe?
While the UN says more than 90% of Syrians live in poverty, Syria's Prime Minister said two days ago that 25% of Syrians are well off enough that they will not be able to access subsidized goods starting from early next year.
While the Minister in charge said earlier this month that just 500k Syrians will be excluded from subsidies, the PM is now suggesting that up to a quarter of current recipients will no longer qualify.
Lifting the subsidies threshold further highlights the depth of the economic crisis in regime-held areas.
Aid organizations should start planning for the implications.
