Severe Wheat Shortage in Hasakeh Amid Drought and Political Tensions
The Governorate of Hasakeh, which produced over a third of Syria's wheat in the 2000s (over 1.4 million tonnes), might produce only 0.6 million tonnes this harvest as drought hammers the region.
Damascus is likely to receive a tiny fraction of that already low production (10k tonnes) as the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) offers a higher price and imposes penalties on selling to Damascus.
Regime areas struggled with bread shortages when the economic and agricultural situations were far better.
