Merchandise statistics reported by Syria's trade partners suggest the debate over Russia's involvement in Syria's phosphate fields is overblown.

Phosphate exports fell from $270 million US in 2010 to merely $27 million in 2018, and much of it is exported to or funneled through Serbia.
