Cancelled Contracts, Legal Gaps, and Political Timing

On 2 August 2025, the Secretary-General of the presidency nullified many advisory appointments, citing State Council Law 32 of 2019. The move was framed as a corrective step after the irregular appointments of tens of ministerial advisors.
Yet the timing also coincided with the resignation of Sima Abd Rabbo, who had condemned the government’s handling of the Sweida crisis. This raised questions over whether such ad hoc appointments are seen as politically risky by the authorities.
The episode underscored a deeper problem: without a transparent process to govern future selections, the directive risks deepening uncertainty—appearing less like genuine reform and more like another improvised maneuver in a system still dominated by patronage and political calculation.
