- [The Deteriorating Humanitarian Crisis in Syria: Is There an End in Sight?](https://karamshaar.com/events/the-deteriorating-humanitarian-crisis-in-syria-is-there-an-end-in-sight/): The Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011, has created one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time. Hundreds of thousands are dead and 13.5 million Syrians are now refugees or internally displaced. Up to 128,000 have been forcibly disappeared and 14,000 killed under torture. At present, 11.1 million Syrians are in need of humanitarian assistance and 80 percent live in extreme poverty without access to food, safe water, or health care services, and the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated their plight. About half of the people affected are children, who are further impacted by the lack of educational opportunities and the oppressive practices of child labor and child marriage.

- [Implications and policy responses for banking sector sanctions on Syria](https://karamshaar.com/publications/implications-and-policy-responses-for-banking-sector-sanctions-on-syria/): Karam Shaar Advisory, Benjamin Fève, Vittorio Maresca di Serracapriola, and Karam Shaar (July 6, 2025) The ousting of the Assad regime in December 2024 has opened a window to reassess existing sanctions. While the EU and UK have lifted most of their sanctions, the US has issued ad-hoc instruments such as General License 25 and temporary suspensions of the Caesar Act. As a result, Syria’s banking sector remains largely isolated from the global financial system. Drawing on interviews with Syrian bankers and compliance experts, this report evaluates the extent to which sanctions have contributed to the deterioration of the banking sector and explores pathways for reintegrating the country into the international financial system. It proposes a roadmap built on the enforcement of UN conventions, adherence to the Wolfsberg Group’s Transparency Principles and FATF standards, and enhanced coordination and capacity-building efforts with the IMF and the World Bank.

Many of the influential Assads do not have even a photo online. The Assads’ secrecy and the public interest in them provide the perfect recipe for rumors and half-truths. This article presents numerous examples of incorrect information about the Assads in local and Western media, including from the EU, Le Monde, and Pro Justice. ​The lack of knowledge about the family members and their roles in the regime is reflected in the names sanctioned by the US and the EU.
