Another heartbreaking report from PAX for Peace, this time on Syria’s vanishing forests.

“In Latakia alone, there was a 31 percent loss in tree cover in the period 2001-2021. In Hama, the loss was 34 percent.”

Deforestation in IDP and Kurdish areas in northwest Syria, especially over the past 5 years, is happening at a spectacular pace.

The report identifies five key reasons: the need for firewood, charcoal production, forest fires, lack of governance, and military operations. You can read the full study here.
