Six Months Later, Most Syrian Refugees Still Haven’t Returned

Despite Assad’s fall, only 577 thousand Syrian refugees have officially returned—less than 10% of the 6.1 million who fled the country. Inside Syria, 17% of internally displaced people (IDPs) have gone home.

The reasons? Destroyed homes, unaffordable rents, lack of services, and insecurity. The change in power eased the security concerns of many displaced persons but didn’t rebuild what the war destroyed.

UN surveys show that 80% of refugees want to return, but most are waiting for real conditions that make return possible.
