Statistics Suggest Russian Involvement in Syrian Phosphate Fields Are Overstated

Merchandise statistics reported by Syria’s trade partners suggest the debate over Russia’s involvement in Syria’s phosphate fields is overblown.

Phosphate exports fell from $270 million US in 2010 to merely $27 million in 2018, and much of it is exported to or funneled through Serbia.
