Syria’s gas supply remains far below pre-war levels. With key infrastructure destroyed and the Conoco processing plant, the country’s largest, significantly underutilized due to political division, the sector is stalled and facing a major supply gap. But recent developments may mark a turning point:
• In March 2025, the SDF and Damascus signed an agreement to begin negotiations on joint management of oil and gas resources, with potential to unlock 13 million cubic meters per day from Conoco.
• Qatar is delivering gas to help meet demand, while Türkiye is planning to do soon.
• Azerbaijan’s SOCAR signed a memorandum in June 2025 to supply natural gas.
Why it matters:
• National gas-fired capacity: 4,755 MW; only 1,144 MW operational
• Electricity shortfall: 25,409 GWh
Could joint management and foreign support revive the sector?
