“While the tempo of ISIS attacks in Syria remains low, the group’s June 13 attack on an Iraqi oil tanker driving through rural Aleppo is a warning sign. Though it involved just two gunmen firing at a single truck from a distance, it demonstrates how ISIS, with minimal resources, can interfere with, deter or even prevent elements of Syria’s new economic interconnectivity with its regional neighbors. Though Syria is dealing with a plethora of security challenges, neutralizing a loose network of dispersed ISIS cells is a vital priority.”
