Whether the Syrian gas imported through the Arab Gas Pipeline is originally Israeli depends on your answer to the following question:
Imagine a pot in Egypt with locally made soup, but it’s not enough to feed Egyptians. So they always need top-ups from Israel. Syria comes and asks for soup through Egypt. Is Syria’s portion from Egypt or Israel? In my opinion, the fact that Syria is drinking from Egypt’s pot doesn’t really mean much—it’s just a logistical detail.
This news from a few days ago explains what happened recently: Israel stopped supplying gas to Egypt, so Egypt stopped supplying Syria, where electricity production dropped sharply.
If buying Israeli gas is a temporary fix, I would understand. But voluntarily placing Syrians’ electricity supplies in the hands of Israeli politicians is a strategic mistake.
